Inside electrophysiology at J&J: From cardiac mapping to patient impact
Helping patients extends far beyond the direct care team. For us, all our teams have a role in helping people return to what matters most to them. Even if the patients never know their names, our employees get the satisfaction of knowing their work makes an impact every day.
If you are looking for a way to combine clinical knowledge with real patient impact, you might consider our electrophysiology career paths. One of our clinical specialists shares some of the rewards and opportunities to grow in this role.
Where clinical expertise meets improved patient outcomes
Electrophysiology Clinical Account Specialists at J&J provide clinical information and guidance to electrophysiologists during cardiac ablation procedures, helping physicians visualize and treat arrhythmias using advanced cardiac mapping systems.
For Robin M., a senior clinical consultant with J&J MedTech in Germany, that means the opportunity to bring technical and clinical knowledge into the procedure room.
"I usually work closely with physicians and EP lab teams rather than directly with patients," Robin said. "However, one moment stays with me every day. We treated a young patient who was suffering from symptomatic cardiac arrhythmia that significantly impacted his daily life. When the sedation was reduced and the procedure was completed successfully, you could already see the relief on the patient's face. It was clear that a huge burden had been taken from him."
That moment highlights something unique about careers with us: Even though you may be working behind the scenes, your expertise can help a clinical team deliver care that patients feel far beyond the procedure room.
Learning to see the heart differently
Electrophysiology looks beyond the physical structure of the heart to evaluate what is happening based on its electrical activity. Advanced 3D mapping systems allow physicians to visualize that activity and identify the source of arrhythmia for targeted ablation therapy.
“Physicians rely on us not only for technology, but also for expertise, integrity and responsiveness,” Robin said. “That helps us to make a lasting impact on patients by reducing symptoms, restoring quality of life and helping them return to the activities that matter most to them.”
Better mapping gives physicians a clearer understanding of each patient's individual arrhythmia. The more precisely they can identify the source of the problem, the more effectively they can treat it. This can contribute to shorter procedures, more predictable workflows and better outcomes.
Bring your expertise closer to the patient
As electrophysiology continues to advance, procedures will likely become more precise, efficient and individualized. J&J developed the first real-time 3D cardiac mapping system, and for more than 30 years, we've been the global market leader in the science and technology of cardiac arrhythmia treatment.
This is an area that will continue to evolve, as electrophysiology is one of the fastest-growing segments within medtech. Atrial fibrillation (AFib), for example, impacts over 50 million people worldwide, yet fewer than 5% of them receive ablation treatment.
"You know you're building your career in a field where there'll be significant investment, continuous innovation and opportunities for real-world impact at J&J," said Tara D., Head of Talent Acquisition for MedTech Cardiovascular. "I think that whole combination is compelling."
