Delivery Unit, Global Development Sr. Director, Program Management Team Leader

Position Summary

The Program Management Team Leader provides strategic and operational leadership, functional management and people development for the Program Management group, driving the allocation, development and training of resources to support the execution of the portfolio.

The Program Management Team Leader partners closely with DU DAS or ED Leader and Therapeutic Area DAS leadership to drive and operationalize compound development strategy and to optimize portfolio value.

The Program Management Team Leader helps the DU to identify and escalate portfolio/program risks and issues and to resolve these in collaboration with all R&D functions.

The Program Management Team Leader is responsible to ensure all associated resources are planned in accordance with the Global Development workforce management plan to assure the capabilities and experience levels of the staff meet the the specific needs of the Delivery Unit, to identify gaps and assure that staff are developed to fulfil those gaps.

The role will be accountable to hire, onboard and train the resources needed to support the execution of the portfolio to optimize value.

The Program Management group primarily consists Program Management Leaders who are a thought partner to the CDT leaders and co-creates the CDT strategy and translates it into a comprehensive crossfunctional plan that delivers optimized program outcomes.

PMLs are responsible enabling the CDT to delivery optimal outcomes and translating the Compound Development Team (CDT) strategy into a Compound Development Plan (CDP).

Principal Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic operational leadership over the PML group and DAS Delivery Team of the Deliverly Unit and the portfolio managed by the PML group:

  • Provide ALL direct reporting and operational leadership over the DAS PML group and the portfolio managed by the PML group. Increased DAS specific responsibilities including co-leadership with DAS DU Leader at DAS Extended Leadership Team.

  • Strategy and execution support and planning regarding finance, milestone, and CDP alignment to optimize portfolio value. Including supporting team’s on approach to governance and escalating issues to senior management in support of unblocking work for the teams.

  • Drive excellence, efficiency and consistency across the project management teams, and make the right connections across DU and JNJ IM (i.e. TA, GD, DPDS, Finance, Regulatory) to enable optimal delivery of the DAS strategy and portfolio value.

  • Single point of accountability with the Program Management Capabilities Leader from BGIA to ensure PML capabilities and innovations are at or above industry standards and are effectively deployed to the DU.

  • Ensure best practices and PML capabilities are leveraged across the DAS portfolio, DU, BGIA and JNJ IM. Through supporting the PML CoP.

  • Participation in DU/DAS/ED meetings, and contributing to the Annual DAS/ED Progress report.

  • Partners with key Delivery Unit stakeholders, and creates a culture of cross-functional collaboration across all teams:

  • Ability to develop, maintain and influence stakeholder relationships internally and externally with Sr. Management (DU leadership, TA Leadership, Finance, GD Leaders, Business Development etc)

  • Resourcing and budget:

  • Lead the PML organization so that project resource planning is completed. Including establishing and managing budget and resource allocation in the PM group. Oversee staff workload to ensure optimal utilization of resources.

  • Innovation and optimization:

  • Sets strategic, innovative and operational objectives for their organization by identifying high impact opportunities across DU and GD, ensuring their alignment with overall DU and GD objectives.

  • Use an innovative and forward-thinking mindset to identify, adapt and apply novel and creative methodologies that optimize project management ecosystem.

  • Leadership for the development and implementation of these innovative business practices and improved processes to the DU and GD through initiative leadership.

  • Build a high performing team through on-going development, performance management and coaching. Take ownership for ensuring a strong pipeline of leaders within the organization through the Succession Planning process, and foster employee engagement, inclusion and Credo Behaviors.

  • Be the external face of program management for JNJ IM by participating in program management congresses through presentation of PM innovations or panel membership

Education and Experience Requirements

  • A BS degree in a scientific discipline is required. An advanced degree (e.g., Masters, MBA, MD, PhD) is preferred.

  • A minimum of 15 years with progressive leadership experience in the Pharmaceutical industry

  • A minimum of 8-10 years of people management experience is required.

  • Expert knowledge of drug development process over the product life cycle, from discovery to marketing is required.

  • Expert knowledge of project management and portfolio management is required.

  • Trusted, inclusive, leader with demonstrated experience in managing and leading teams through change and to higher performance. Successful track record of developing talent. Effective leadership skills and proven ability to foster team productivity and cohesiveness.

  • Ability to provide visionary and strategic leadership. Excellent communication and influencing skills and ability to establish strong and enduring relationships in a global matrix environment as well as the innate flexibility to work in a rapidly growing and changing organization.

  • In addition, the following competencies are required: collaboration and teaming, integrity and Credo based-actions, results and performance driven, sense of urgency, and managing complexity.

Other

  • Domestic and International travel up to 10% may be required

Compensation and Benefits

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs commiserate with experience and adjusted to country location guidelines.
Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.

In the United States of America, the anticipated base pay range for this position is $173,000 to $299,000.

Employees may be eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).

Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year

Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year

Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year of Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
