We are searching for the best talent for Mechanical Engineering Interns within Robotics R&D.

Purpose: This internship is based in Santa Clara, California and offers a unique opportunity for students passionate about mechanical engineering design, development, and integration into medical robotics. Mechanical engineering interns will work alongside other engineering domains such as electrical, mechatronics, controls, software, and clinical engineering. This will support the prototyping, development, test, and production of innovative surgical robotic platforms that improve patient outcomes worldwide.

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will design, prototype, integrate, and test a complex medical device system. You will work with all engineering functions to make contributions in the fields of robotics design, instrument design, and more. This role offers a high degree of autonomy and opportunities for project growth within the team as we progress towards realizing our vision.

You will be responsible for:

  • Assist with designing and prototyping activities including CAD, manufacturing, assembly, testing, debugging, and documentation for mechanical assemblies and systems

  • Generate and present design concepts and perform design reviews to team members

  • Utilize various manufacturing methods to quickly prototype your designs, including 3D printing, machining, hand tools and bonding.

  • Support hardware or instrument integration, calibration, troubleshooting, and validation efforts.

  • Document designs, test procedures, and root cause analysis process.

  • Participate in clinical assessments of robotic devices in inanimate anatomical models

Role Variability: This internship track covers a range of mechanical engineering roles, including design, assembly, manufacturing, and test. Responsibilities will vary depending on the specific project, team, or role, providing a broad experience in robotics hardware development.

Qualifications / Requirements:

Education

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited program pursuing a bachelor’s, graduate or PhD degree returning to an academic program after the completion of the internship.

  • Target majors include Aerospace Engineering, Automation Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, and Robotics Engineering or closely related field.

Experience and skills

  • Mechanical design experience, including CAD modeling, assembly, or testing.

  • Ability to analyze problems and derive thoughtful solutions by working with your team members.

  • Self-starter with proven examples of engaging in self-directed learning and remaining productive with minimal support.

  • Available to work full-time (40 hours/week) and during hours agreed upon with the hiring manager.

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 reflective of all coursework

  • Commitment to June 1 – August 20, 2027, or June 21 – September 10, 2027, term dates to align with cohort

  • Permanent US work authorization without the need for sponsorship now, or in the future (The company does not provide sponsorship for employment visa status. Students currently in the country on CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT require future sponsorship).

Nice-to-Have

  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn, evaluate, and adopt new AI tools and platforms to meet evolving project needs.

  • Basic understanding of medical device development and design control.

  • Experience with machining and hardware tools.

  • Understanding of plastic injection molding, metal injection molding and machining principles

  • Understanding of materials and material properties

  • Familiarity with robotic hardware elements and controls.

  • Passion for healthcare innovation and robotics.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :

The expected base pay for this position is Sophomore $32/hr, Junior $35.50/hr, Senior $39/hr, Master’s degree $46.50/hr, PhD degree $61/hr.

Additional Description for Pay Transparency:

Co-Ops/Interns are eligible to participate in Company sponsored employee medical benefits in accordance with the terms of the plan. Co-Ops and Interns are eligible for the following sick time benefits: up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington, up to 56 hours per calendar year Co-Ops and Interns are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension)
