POSITION SUMMARY
Therapeutics Development & Supply (TDS) bridges scientific discovery and clinical application across Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC), device development, and clinical supply chain, ensuring every molecule, modality, and delivery system is developed, scaled, and supplied under rigorous scientific and regulatory standards.
The R&D Data, Data Science and AI organization is seeking a Director, Data Science to lead a team of applied data scientists, machine learning scientists, and GenAI/agentic engineers who turn TDS’s scientific and operational data into AI- and data-science-driven workflows. You will own the design, build, validation, and delivery of the solutions behind TDS’s digital roadmap, from model-informed process design and lab-in-the-loop workflows to scientific reasoning agents and dynamic document generation. Success is measured in delivering durable, reusable capabilities rather than delivered pilots, and in how far data science scales beyond your own team into TDS. Leading 5+ individual contributors, you will build on AI-ready data products and semantic layers and partner with scientists, SMEs, DDSAI, and J&J Technology to move solutions from pilots to governed production-level products. This leader is expected to drive outcomes through a combination of hands-on technical work, delegation and influence.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Applied AI/ML & GenAI Solutions Leadership
- Define and execute the TDS AI Solutions strategy and portfolio roadmap aligned to TDS and DDSAI priorities, spanning scientific reasoning and decisions, model-informed design, autonomous labs and plants, intelligent demand-driven supply, and dynamic document generation.
- Lead the design, build, validation, and delivery of AI/ML, generative AI, and agentic co-scientist solutions, translating complex scientific and operational problems into well-scoped modeling problems with fit-for-purpose methods.
- Establish reusable solution patterns, shared components, evaluation frameworks, and agentic architectures that scale across TDS modalities and functions, favoring configurable capabilities over point solutions, and setting the criteria for when a bespoke build is justified.
- Serve as DDSAI technical owner for the large, shared AI capabilities for TDS, representing TDS requirements to cross-functional platform, data, and technology teams; arbitrating trade-offs across competing functional demands, influencing sequencing and release priorities, and setting the technical direction and multi-year roadmap for those capabilities within the broader R&D data and AI strategy.
Solution Delivery, Technical Excellence & Productionization
- Set and enforce standards for model development, validation, evaluation, and monitoring, including version control, testing, documentation, reproducibility, and code review.
- Consume AI-ready data products, ontologies, and knowledge graphs from DDSAI, and partner with J&J Technology and platform teams on deployment, integration, scaling, and monitoring (MLOps, agentic orchestration, observability).
- Drive model validation, transparency, traceability, and computerized-system compliance for solutions operating in regulated (GxP) environments.
- Define lifecycle and sustainability: support models, documentation, retraining and revalidation cadence, total cost of ownership, and criteria for scaling, consolidating, or retiring solutions.
People Leadership, Capability Building & Scientific Collaboration
- Recruit, develop, and lead a team of applied data scientists, ML scientists, and GenAI/NLP engineers, and grow TDS’s quantitative and AI fluency.
- Scale TDS’s own data science capacity through common tooling, coding and validation standards, reusable templates, and reference implementations that TDS-embedded data scientists adopt directly, reinforced by onboarding, code review, mentoring, and communities of practice.
- Work directly with process chemists, analytical and formulation scientists, engineers, and supply chain SMEs to frame problems, curate and interpret data, and co-design solutions that fit real laboratory and manufacturing workflows and earn daily use.
- Maintain a dotted-line operating model with DDSAI AI/ML and GenAI leadership for technical fit and reuse across the federated organization, and align Senior Director and VP stakeholders across TDS, DDSAI, and J&J Technology to prioritize the portfolio and drive adoption.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Advanced degree in Engineering , Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field.
- 10+ years of experience in applied data science, machine learning, or AI solution development, with at least 3 years in a people leadership role.
- Deep, hands-on expertise across the modern AI/ML stack: Python, applied ML and statistical modeling, GenAI/LLMs and agentic patterns, and cloud environments (AWS, Snowflake).
- Track record of building teams that deliver AI/ML into production and sustained adoption, including reusable components used well beyond their original use case.
- Ability to influence and align technical and business stakeholders at the Senior Director and VP level, including representing a function’s requirements into shared platform or enterprise capability decisions.
- Evidence of growing data science capability beyond a central team through standards, shared tooling, training, or mentoring that enabled embedded data scientists to build and maintain their own solutions.
- Proven ability to collaborate with scientists and subject matter experts to co-define problems and co-develop solutions that are adopted in practice.
Preferred
- Experience in pharmaceutical R&D, CMC/process development, life sciences manufacturing, clinical supply, or GxP environments.
- Experience delivering generative AI and agentic (co-scientist) solutions, including evaluation, guardrails, and orchestration.
- Familiarity with MLOps practices (model registries, feature stores, automated retraining, monitoring) and knowledge graphs and semantic layers, and a track record of co-owning deployment and architecture decisions with IT and platform organizations.
WHY THIS ROLE IS UNIQUE
