Job Overview

The Director Japan is a senior leadership role responsible for providing strategic direction, operational oversight, and cross‑functional leadership to advance business priorities for DePuy Synthes in Japan. This role partners closely with regional and global stakeholders to drive execution excellence, ensure alignment with organizational strategy, and deliver sustainable business outcomes. The position offers the opportunity to shape strategy, influence decision‑making at the highest levels, and lead teams in a complex, highly regulated MedTech environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set strategic direction and priorities for the ROAP function, ensuring alignment with DePuy Synthes regional and global objectives.

  • Lead and develop high‑performing teams, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Partner with senior commercial, operational, and functional leaders to translate strategy into executable plans and measurable outcomes.

  • Oversee governance, planning, and performance management processes, including tracking key business metrics and risks.

  • Drive operational excellence by identifying opportunities to improve processes, resource allocation, and decision‑making.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, quality standards, and internal policies in all areas of responsibility.

  • Act as a trusted advisor to executive leadership, providing insights, recommendations, and clear communication on business performance and priorities.

  • Represent DePuy Synthes with key internal and external stakeholders as required.

Qualifications

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in business, life sciences, engineering, or a related field.

  • Preferred: Master’s degree (MBA or equivalent) or advanced professional qualification.

Experience and Skills

Required:

  • 10-12 years of experience including senior‑level responsibility within MedTech, healthcare, or a similarly complex, regulated industry.

  • Demonstrated ability to set strategy and lead large, cross‑functional teams.

  • Strong business acumen with experience in planning, execution, and performance management.

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and change‑management capabilities.

  • Experience operating within matrixed, global organizations.

Preferred:

  • Experience supporting or leading regional or country‑level strategy and operations.

  • Proven stakeholder management skills, including influencing at executive levels.

  • Background in orthopedics, medical devices, or broader healthcare sectors.

  • Demonstrated success driving transformation or continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Experience working closely with global headquarters or regional leadership teams.

Other:

  • Languages: Fluent Japanese required; business‑level English required.

  • Travel: Domestic and international travel expected (up to ~25%).

  • Certifications: None required; professional certifications are a plus.

  • Work Authorization: Must be eligible to work in Japan.

Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals. Should you accept this position, it is anticipated that, following conclusion of the transaction, you would be an employee of DePuy Synthes and your employment would be governed by DePuy Synthes employment processes, programs, policies, and benefit plans. In that case, details of any planned changes would be provided to you by DePuy Synthes at an appropriate time and subject to any necessary consultation processes.
