Post-Doctoral Scientist – Emerging Technologies (Biologics Continuous Drug Product Manufacturing)

Location: Schaffhausen, Switzerland

Shape the future of biologics manufacturing!

Join MSAT Emerging Technologies and help redefine how biologics drug products are manufactured. In this role, you will develop and experimentally validate continuous manufacturing concepts in partnership with our R&D colleagues, enabling next-generation, integrated, and data-driven manufacturing.

You will work at the interface of drug product R&D, process engineering, and advanced analytics, contributing to Johnson & Johnson’s strategic priorities in Process Intensification (PI) and Integrated Quality & Real-Time Release (IQRTR).

Your impact:

Scientific lead and execution of hands-on laboratory work to design, build, and test continuous drug product manufacturing concepts for biologics.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design and run lab-scale experiments to develop continuous manufacturing processes;

  • Generate and analyze data on critical quality attributes (CQAs) and process performance;

  • Implement and evaluate Process Analytical Technology (PAT) for real-time monitoring and control;

  • Advance process understanding using data-driven (DOE, chemometrics) or mechanistic approaches;

  • Translate lab findings into proof-of-principle (PoP) and proof-of-concept (PoC) packages;

  • Partner with R&D, MSAT, Quality, and Digital teams to advance technologies toward GMP readiness and shape technology and control strategies;

  • Contribute to intellectual property generation, including potential patents and publications, as well as documentation standards and innovation strategy.

This role combines scientific leadership with experimental execution, enabling you to turn concepts into scalable solutions.

What you bring:

  • PhD in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biotechnology, or related field (0–2 years post-PhD preferred);

  • Strong hands-on lab experience in biopharmaceutical development, analytical sciences, or related technologies;

  • Experience in one or more of the following:

  • Biologics drug product development or formulation;

  • Continuous manufacturing or process intensification;

  • Process Analytical Technology (PAT) or analytical development;

  • Process engineering and control;

  • Proven ability to design experiments and translate data into insights, with the ability to communicate complex scientific topics clearly to diverse audiences, including senior leadership.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with continuous compounding / mixing concepts / aseptic manufacturing for biologics;

  • Familiarity with PAT tools, sensors, and real-time data analysis;

  • Knowledge of GMP environments and scale-up principles;

  • Programming or data analysis skills (Python, MATLAB, R).
