Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals. Should you accept this position, it is anticipated that, following conclusion of the transaction, you would be an employee of DePuy Synthes and your employment would be governed by DePuy Synthes employment processes, programs, policies, and benefit plans. In that case, details of any planned changes would be provided to you by DePuy Synthes at an appropriate time and subject to any necessary consultation processes.

Position Summary

The Sr. Manager, EHS&S is responsible for overseeing site Environmental Health Safety & Sustainability at the Suzhou site and nearby facilities, ensuring that all operations comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. This role directs a dedicated team, manages individual performance, and develops tactical, operational, and resource plans to support the organization’s objectives and business goals.

Additionally, the position leads strategic EHS&S initiatives and serves as the main point of contact for internal stakeholders across commercial, R&D, supply chain, and other functional areas, ensuring effective coordination and alignment of EHS&S efforts throughout the organization.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • 25% - Jointly accountable with Plant Manager/Site Leaders for EHS&S performance and ensuring compliance with all Federal, State, local and Company regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • 20% - Lead and supervise EHS&S professionals and consultants, overseeing goal setting, coaching, employee development, and succession planning.

  • 15% - Own and execute the site EHS&S strategy, translating enterprise and regional objectives into actionable plans that drive risk reduction, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement; including maintaining ISO 14001 certification.

  • 15% - Partner with site leadership and operations to proactively identify hazards, assess risk, and implement effective controls through robust risk assessments, management of change, and incident prevention processes.

  • 10% - Lead incident reporting, investigation, and corrective action processes, including root cause analysis, regulatory notifications, and verification of sustainable corrective actions.

  • 10% - Oversee environmental, health, and safety permitting and performance, including monitoring emissions, waste, and other key metrics, and ensuring accurate reporting to internal and external stakeholders.

  • 5% - Drive EHS&S culture and capability development, including training, coaching, and engagement of employees, supervisors, and contractors to build ownership and accountability at all levels.

  • 5% - Manage audits, inspections, and external interactions, serving as the site EHS&S contact for regulatory agencies, internal auditors, and customers, and ensuring timely closure of findings and commitments.

Provides EHS&S input to business decisions, capital projects, and crisis management for significant incidents.

Required Qualifications

Required Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, Sciences, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).

Required Years of Related Experience: 8-10+ years EHS/EHS&S experience in medical device manufacturing or related industry with strong regulatory oversight.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Technical experience in diverse EHS&S areas including but not limited to air, water, hazardous and medical waste, machine safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, and chemical handling is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated project management skills are required and individual must have technical/working knowledge of federal, state and local regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Minimum Education: Master’s degree in EHS, Engineering, Business, or related discipline.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Professional EHS certification preferred (e.g., CSP, CIH, REP, CHMM, etc).

  • Ability to define and implement solutions with limited direction from his/her manager.

  • Creativity to anticipate customer needs and develop resourceful solutions to meet needs with limited resources.

  • Strong communication (written & verbal), problem-solving, influence, organizing, and time management skills.

  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to influence management.

  • Ability to explain complex issues and requirements in an easily understood manner.

  • Ability to produce & maintain project schedules & budgets.

  • Ability to quickly interpret complex regulatory issues and provide recommended course of action.

  • Ability to work in a matrix, team oriented environment.

Key Working Relationships

Internal: Site EHS&S Leaders, Make, Deliver, Engineering, Facilities, Quality, Legal, HR, Security.

External: Routine interaction with EH&S regulatory agencies, laboratory contractors/service providers, and industry associations is required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct Reports: 4 direct reports

Indirect Reports: Supervision and direction of external services providers and consultants.

Decision Making Authority

Makes hiring recommendations; trains employees; plans work of others; reviews work quality and quantity; conducts performance reviews; makes pay and promotional recommendations; recommends budget amounts.
