Q&A with a medical science liaison focused on dermatology and rheumatology
A Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a clinical expert who connects the science behind our medicines with healthcare providers to help provide targeted treatments for patients. It’s a critical role within J&J, and an area where we are actively hiring across the world and therapeutic areas.
Wondering what it’s like to work as an MSL? Read on to meet Rebecca S., a senior MSL who liaises with rheumatologists and dermatologists to inform them of the latest treatments, research and education.
Q: How has your diverse professional background shaped the way you partner with healthcare professionals as an MSL?
A: Working with dermatologists and rheumatologists has elevated the work I do. Hearing their diverse perspectives has helped shape my understanding of our targeted cytokine blockade data and how we are developing innovative treatments for the future in these specialties. Their complementary ways of caring for their patients and the outcomes they seek helped me to co-create medical education materials that address their differing and overlapping needs, and the dual approach makes it easy to switch the focus as needed.
Q: What do you find most meaningful or rewarding?
A: I absolutely love seeing novel, targeted therapies come to market to help patients who hadn’t had these types of treatment options before. I feel very proud that my discussions center on our innovative medicines, the science behind them, and our clinical data. I love being on the ground and seeing basic science discoveries that have been translated into medicines that help real people every day. Contributing to projects that build on the basic science to innovate for clinical practice feels both meaningful and rewarding.
“Every day I get up and look forward to seeing what we can do together as a company to close treatment gaps in areas with some of the greatest unmet needs.”

Q: What makes J&J a place you are excited to grow your career?
A: What makes this environment meaningful for me is Our Credo. It makes me feel incredibly proud to work here. I feel inspired to grow in my role because it is aligned with my values and my lifelong career purpose to tackle the toughest challenges facing patients. I love doing this collaboratively with my colleagues locally and around the world who share the same sense of purpose.
