Summary
The Reliability Technician III is responsible for supporting asset availability, equipment reliability, and quality compliance for electromechanical manufacturing equipment through preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and reliability improvement activities. This position performs routine preventive maintenance using defined work instructions and applies structured reliability methods to help eliminate functional failures, reduce downtime, and strengthen production equipment performance.
This role provides direct technical support to Manufacturing Operations, PM & Reliability, Engineering, Quality, and other cross-functional partners. The technician helps identify equipment concerns, supports root cause analysis, assists with corrective and preventive actions, and contributes to maintenance process improvements in a regulated medical device manufacturing environment.
The Reliability Technician III is expected to work safely, follow applicable procedures, maintain accurate documentation, and demonstrate Johnson & Johnson Credo-based behaviors while supporting production continuity, safety, quality, compliance, and continuous improvement objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet all requirements of the PM Technician II position.
- Drive OEE improvements by supporting equipment availability, preventive maintenance execution, troubleshooting, and timely repair of production equipment.
- Perform routine asset assessments with Operations and maintenance partners to document equipment conditions and support corrective follow-up.
- Provide interdepartmental support to meet production equipment maintenance, repair, and reliability goals.
- Perform preventive maintenance activities, including inspections, adjustments, lubrication, greasing, oil changes, and replacement of routine wear components as required.
- Develop, revise, and follow preventive maintenance procedures using good engineering and maintenance practices to reduce equipment failures and improve maintenance effectiveness.
- Address spare part management concerns related to obsolescence, stockouts, availability, and repair readiness.
- Assist in resolving nonconformance, corrective action, and preventive action tasks related to equipment performance, maintenance execution, or quality compliance.
- Apply basic reliability and root cause analysis tools to identify recurring equipment issues and support sustainable corrective actions.
- Demonstrate a working understanding of maintenance planning, scheduling, asset management, and reliability improvement processes.
- Identify and complete maintenance cost improvement projects and small-scale change management activities with appropriate supervision.
- Train Technician II and Technician III personnel on assigned maintenance tasks, procedures, and equipment support expectations as appropriate.
- Comply with applicable Environmental, Health, Safety, Quality, FDA, ISO, GMP, and site requirements while performing assigned work.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by management to support PM & Reliability goals and business needs.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Associate degree, vocational training, technical certification, military technical training, or equivalent technical education in a relevant field is highly preferred.
- Four (4) to six (6) years of college, trade, or military training in a technical field, or equivalent industrial experience emphasizing electromechanical systems, PLCs, and pneumatics is required.
- Line qualified or PM qualified across multiple generational technologies is required.
- Demonstrated proficiency and mastery in at least three (3) of the following areas is required: pneumatic systems, servo system maintenance and troubleshooting, injection molding maintenance and troubleshooting, sterilizer operation and maintenance, vision systems, solvent hydration modules, dosing systems, robotic systems, and heat seal systems.
- Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electromechanical manufacturing equipment.
- Understanding of FDA, ISO, GMP, safety, and quality requirements within a regulated manufacturing environment.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with Operations, Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and other cross-functional partners.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role, including stooping, walking, pulling, light lifting up to 23 pounds, grasping, hearing, visual acuity, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, and crawling.
- Must demonstrate behaviors consistent with Johnson & Johnson’s Credo and Leadership Imperatives.
Preferred Experience and Skills
- At least four (4) years of experience in an industrial maintenance role emphasizing electromechanical systems, PLCs, and pneumatics.
- Experience supporting preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, equipment troubleshooting, reliability improvement, or asset care programs in a manufacturing environment.
- Working knowledge of Lean Yellow Belt, Lean Green Belt, Six Sigma Yellow Belt, or Six Sigma Green Belt principles is preferred.
- Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems, work-order tracking, spare parts processes, and maintenance documentation.
- Experience supporting FDA-regulated, ISO, GMP, medical device, or similarly regulated manufacturing operations is preferred.
Conditions and Physical Demands of Job
This role may require standing, walking, reaching, pushing, pulling, kneeling, crouching, grasping, fingering, talking, visual acuity, and light lifting up to 25 pounds. Work is generally performed in an indoor manufacturing environment and may require adherence to gowning, safety, quality, and environmental requirements based on assigned work areas.
