The Automation Product Owner plays a key role in crafting the digital, automation, and workflow capabilities that accelerate Synthetics Development across small molecules, peptides, and oligonucleotides. This role ensures our scientists and automation engineers have intuitive, reliable, and scalable tools that improve efficiency, data quality, and speed of execution.

The Product Owner sits at the intersection of science, operations, and technology — translating the needs of chemists and automation teams into clear product vision, roadmaps, and priorities that improve value delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

Product Strategy & Roadmap

  • Own the product vision, strategy, and multi‑year roadmap for the Lab Automation Suite.
  • Define and prioritize product features based on value, user impact, feasibility, and alignment with JNJ R&D strategic goals.
  • Drive continuous refinement of user journeys across automated experiment design, execution, and workflow orchestration.

Partner Engagement & Requirements Leadership

  • Partner with chemists, automation engineers, and digital/IT teams to collect and validate user requirements.
  • Translate user needs into use cases, requirements, and acceptance criteria.
  • Facilitate design thinking sessions and user feedback loops.

Execution & Value Delivery

  • Manage the product backlog and lead sprint planning with engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with automation squads to ensure instrument integration and workflow execution are reliable and user‑friendly.
  • Track adoption, performance, user satisfaction, and other product metrics.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Harmonize automation patterns, reusable components, and workflow templates across labs.
  • Partner with enterprise platform owners to improve reuse and integration.
  • Support lifecycle planning and vendor evaluations.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor emerging trends in lab automation, digital lab operations, and UX for scientific applications.
  • Conduct proof‑of‑value experiments for new solutions.
  • Promote user‑centric design and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, information systems, advanced degree preferred.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Experience in a scientific, digital product, or lab operations environment.
  • Proficiency in laboratory workflows or automation concepts.
  • Demonstrated experience owning products or platforms throughout their lifecycle in a multi-team environment.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and problem solving skills.
  • Experience in agile delivery and backlog management.
  • Experience in leading a team of external resources.
  • Familiarity with SDLC methodologies and software validation practices.
  • Understanding of GxP or regulated system requirements.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with lab automation tools (workflow orchestration engines, scheduling software, LES/LIMS/ELN).
  • Experience with high‑throughput labs or integrated lab systems.
  • Understanding of data flows between instruments and execution systems.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is:

€72,500.00 - €115,230.00

Benefits:

In addition to base pay, we offer the following benefits*: an annual bonus with set target (% of pay) depending on pay grade / location, where the actual amount is based on the employees’ and companies’ performance of the previous calendar year, or sales commissions.
