Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals.

Overview

The Associate Package Development Engineer provides technical expertise/ support in the areas of design, development, testing and production scale-up of new packaging components and systems. They work with guidance of Staff/ Senior Packaging Development leadership.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops packaging for medical devices with mentor oversight.

  • Enhances and validates package components and packaging processes.

  • Develops package testing plans and interprets results as required for various projects.

  • Participates in process improvement, cost improvement, quality improvement, change control or task teams.

  • Participates and advises in decisions involving equipment, package design, cost saving and source reduction.

  • Builds technical competencies in packaging materials and processes used in all manufacturing processes.

  • Participates and provides technical expertise for risk assessment and compliance assurance programs.

  • Assure delivery of robust, cost effective, fully compliant packaging solutions that meet current and evolving customers need.

  • Knows and follows all laws and policies that apply to one's job, and maintains the highest levels of professionalism, ethics and compliance at all times.

Extended duties are assigned depending on the packaging business area the employee is supporting :

  • Packaging representative for special project execution

  • Designs packaging for medical devices with mentor oversight

  • Support validation of package systems

  • Coordinates and executes physical testing to ensure product and package integrity for manufacturing through end users.

  • Creates package distribution and shelf-life testing plans, interprets results as required for various projects and communicates those to appropriate groups

  • Reviews and updates technical reports, procedures, policies, and other sources of information to ensure that validations and procedures are consistent with current industry, regulatory requirements and current technology

  • Support test method validation to assure a successful and on-time implementation of the equipment in our test laboratory

  • Interprets all test method validation results and creates related documentation

  • Support and lead small frontend Package Development projects, involvement in design & concept development

  • Understanding of production processes as well as manufacturability of new design concepts

  • Support and preparation of VOCs

  • Lead small potential design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, manufacturing procedures (trouble shooting)

  • Support statistical methods and process/design excellence tools

  • Support design/process failure mode effects and analysis

Requirements

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent Technical Degree or extensive relevant experience required.

Experience

  • Basic knowledge of common packaging materials and packaging technologies for medical devices

  • Technical writing skills is preferred

  • Knowledge of design and manufacturing FMEA preferred

  • Polymer knowledge preferred
