J&J postdoc careers: Applying AI and data science to shape the future of health
Accessing unrivaled data sets? Accelerating impact at scale?
Check and check. It's all part of the job description for J&J postdocs like Tianyu C.
Only a few years removed from academia, the U.K.-based data scientist is applying his expertise in AI and machine learning to not only identify genetic drivers of disease but help shape the future of health.
Here are Tianyu’s tips to help postdocs successfully transition to industry, as well as a few reasons to join J&J's data science team in EMEA today.
Q: What’s your educational background, and what sparked your interest in data science?
A: When I entered university in 2011, “data science” wasn’t a very widely used term. But as a statistics major, I realized two things right away:
- I really enjoy finding patterns in data
- My interest goes beyond traditional statistical tools like linear regression and hypothesis testing
I decided to pursue an M.S. in computational statistics and machine learning, where I worked hands‑on with deep learning and generative models.
That led me to do a Ph.D. in fundamental probabilistic machine learning—pushing me deeper into core AI theory.
During my Ph.D., I watched from the sidelines as breakthrough AI applications in life sciences emerged—innovations like AlphaFold that fundamentally changed the field and demonstrated the transformative potential of AI in biology.
All of these things, taken together, inspired me to apply my expertise in AI towards drug discovery, with the goal of tackling complex diseases and improving patients’ quality of life.
Kind of a long story. But it’s the story of what brought me to J&J.
Q: Do you have any advice to share with postdocs about the transition from academia to industry?
A: You should definitely explore J&J—it’s a uniquely supportive environment for postdocs, offering several compelling advantages.
One is that you get to tackle real-world challenges—with the potential to directly impact patient outcomes—while retaining the freedom to conduct rigorous research and publish in top scientific venues.
Another is that you benefit from being at the intersection of academia and industry. You get to explore different career paths while also deepening your expertise in your field.
Q: What has surprised you the most about J&J since joining?
A: Coming in, I knew J&J was a global leader in pharmaceuticals.
What I didn't know: how advanced J&J’s AI research is in drug discovery, too.
So there’s really a dual focus: internally, on impactful work, and externally, on high-quality external research. Having discussed this with other postdocs from my year, I feel like that’s not the norm.
If you look at my group, for example, we're heavily focused on internal deliverables that directly influence critical projects. At the same time, we're actively publishing in top AI conferences with interns and postdocs who we mentor.
Q: How does your work at J&J connect to real-world impact?
A: My work focuses on causal discovery for gene regulatory network inference—that is, identifying the true genetic drivers of disease. This enables more precise and effective drug development and reduces the risk of pursuing false leads in preclinical research.
Q: How does J&J support growth and development for postdocs like you?
A: Two things are really driving my growth right now: direct collaboration with biologists, and access to large-scale, high-quality biomedical datasets. Both have deepened my understanding of biological constraints and key challenges in the field.
Every day I benefit from direct mentorship from scientists who are well-versed in both biology and AI, and who are helping me bridge disciplinary gaps.
Perhaps equally importantly, my models aren’t evaluated exclusively in simulations—they’re validated by domain experts and through wet-lab experiments, creating rapid feedback loops that can strengthen the quality and amplify the impact of my work.
Q: What about work/life balance?
A: Work/life balance at J&J is excellent. I have plenty of time to enjoy my personal interests, which right now include paddle tennis and West End musicals.
