This role supports programs across many phases of development, from discovery through clinical development and commercialization. The position offers the opportunity to work on a wide range of programs, encompassing multiple technology platforms and modalities. In addition, the role involves regular collaboration with key functions across the organization, including research, development, manufacturing and supply, regulatory affairs, business development, commercial teams, and other legal colleagues.
As a Senior Patent Counsel, Oncology, you will:
- Primarily support Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine and more specifically, the oncology business.
- Develop and execute best-in-class patent strategies in an ever-evolving IP environment.
- Provide a full range of patent support functions for product development teams, including identifying inventions, preparing and prosecuting patent applications, performing freedom-to-operate analyses, rendering opinions, managing outside counsel, drafting and negotiating license and collaboration agreements, providing due diligence support for business development transactions and client counseling.
- Regularly make presentations and engage with the business clients regarding intellectual property and related partnership and contractual matters.
Qualifications:
- A J.D. or LL.M. with admission to and good standing with the bar of one state or the District of Columbia is required. Admission to the USPTO is required.
- A minimum of 5 years of large molecule patent experience at a law firm or in-house legal department of a multinational corporation is required. (Note: time accrued as a practicing patent agent may be considered)
- Ability to articulate and positively engage internal clients and external partners is required.
- Capability to give well-organized, thoughtful presentations to upper management is required.
- A demonstrated competency in the field of biopharmaceutical discovery, development, and commercialization is required.
- Working competency with protein, biologic, and cellular technologies with a required competency for analyzing legal matters associated with the research, development, and commercialization of protein, biologic, and cellular therapeutics.
- Substantial experience drafting and prosecuting biopharmaceutical-related patent applications is required.
- Experience in rendering patentability and non-infringement opinions is required.
- Experience in due diligence activities, license/agreement drafting and negotiation is preferred.
- The ability to accommodate occasional travel is required.

$150,000.00 - $258,750.00Additional Description for Pay Transparency:
Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program.
Subject to the terms of their respective policies and date of hire, employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:
Vacation –120 hours per calendar year
Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Colorado –48 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington –56 hours per calendar year
Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays –13 days per calendar year
Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
Parental Leave – 480 hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child
Bereavement Leave – 240 hours for an immediate family member: 40 hours for an extended family member per calendar year
Caregiver Leave – 80 hours in a 52-week rolling period10 days
