Purpose:

The Business Development Leader – Surgery, Sub-Saharan Africa is responsible for accelerating sustainable growth of the Surgery portfolio across assigned SSA markets by developing market expansion plans, strengthening distributor execution, driving customer engagement, supporting product adoption, and translating regional strategy into country-level commercial action. The role works closely with commercial, marketing, professional education, regulatory, supply chain, finance and distributor partners to improve market access, expand procedural penetration, and deliver business results in complex and diverse healthcare environments.

The position requires strong business acumen, market development capability, customer centricity, and cross-functional leadership to identify growth opportunities and build practical execution plans.

You will be responsible for:

Market Development and Growth Strategy

  • Develop and execute market development plans for assigned SSA countries, aligned with regional Surgery priorities and growth drivers.
  • Identify and prioritize market expansion opportunities across public and private sectors, including new accounts and new geographies
  • Translate portfolio strategy into clear country-level action plans
  • Monitor market trends, competitive dynamics, tender activity, regulatory requirements
  • Work with marketing, regulatory and supply chain to support product registration, launch readiness, and market availability.

Commercial Execution and Distributor Management

  • Drive execution through distributors by setting clear priorities, performance expectations, and follow-up cadence.
  • Support distributor onboarding, capability building, sales force training, and governance processes to improve market coverage and execution quality.
  • Partner with distributors to improve forecasting, tender readiness, inventory planning and customer service levels.
  • Track distributor performance against agreed business objectives, execution priorities, and improvement plans.

Customer Engagement and Market Development

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, KOLs, distributors, and different stakeholders.
  • Support strategic account development by creating account engagement plans.
  • Partners with Professional Education and Clinical Education teams to address capability gaps and enable effective product adoption.
  • Accelerate adoption of NPIs ensuring the right customer targeting, training and distributor readiness.
  • Support tender and contracting opportunities by providing market insights, customer intelligence, and execution plans.
  • Identify opportunities to improve product mix, premium portfolio penetration, and sustainable profitability

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with the Marketing, Professional Education, Clinical Education, Regulatory Affairs, Supply Chain, Finance teams.
  • Ensure SSA market needs are represented in regional business planning, portfolio decisions, demand planning, and resource allocation discussions.
  • Lead cross-functional alignment to remove barriers related to registration, supply, pricing, tender execution, distributor readiness, and customer adoption.
  • Share field insights, best practices, competitive intelligence, and success stories across the region.

Compliance, Governance, and Operational Excellence

  • Ensure full compliance with J&J Credo, policies, procedures, and local regulations.
  • Act as a role model for ethical business conduct and risk management.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical, Life Sciences, or a healthcare-related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in medical devices or healthcare sales.
  • Strong understanding of Surgery / OR environment and hospital selling models.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop markets, manage complex stakeholders, and lead distributors.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic is required; French fluency is a plus.
