Job Description:

Johnson and Johnson is recruiting for a Scientist, MSAT Material Sciences (Lifecycle Management & External Supply Support).


Position Summary:

The Materials Science Scientist is responsible for lifecycle management (LCM) of raw materials and product contact materials used in commercial manufacturing. The role ensures technical, quality, and business requirements are met to enable robust, compliant supply and product performance. In addition to acting as a key Materials Science point of contact for product lifecycle activities, the position is expected to lead technical material science projects across internal and external manufacturing networks, translate ambiguous business or technical challenges into structured execution plans, and align cross-functional stakeholders on risk-based decisions. The Scientist must be able to operate independently in complex and changing environments, creating clarity, prioritization, and timely decision-making while ensuring compliance, supply continuity, and product quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive end-to-end lifecycle management of raw materials across commercial products

  • Provide technical leadership in supplier strategy, material selection and qualification, issue resolution, in partnership with MSAT, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, Planning functions, Procurement and other relevant stakeholders

  • Assess impact of supplier and site-driven raw material changes

  • Provide materials science input into change controls, comparability, and regulatory impact assessments

  • Support product lifecycle activities including deviations, investigations and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Serve as Materials Science point of contact for internal/external manufacturing sites and CMOs

  • Perform and/or review material risk assessments and ensure appropriate control strategies are defined

  • Support establishing and maintenance of raw material control strategies, including specifications and other documents

  • Provide inspection-ready documentation and ensure compliance with GMP and regulatory requirements

  • Lead cross-functional technical projects related to raw material lifecycle management, supplier changes, material investigations, control strategy updates, and external supply support

  • Translate complex or ambiguous material science challenges into structured problem statements, risk assessments, action plans, timelines, and decision proposals

  • Drive alignment across MSAT, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, Planning, Procurement, suppliers, and CMOs to ensure timely execution of material-related deliverables

  • Facilitate technical decision-making in situations with incomplete data by applying risk-based thinking, scientific rationale, and clear escalation pathways

Qualifications & Experience

  • MSc or PhD in Material Science, Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, or related field

  • Experience in biopharmaceutical manufacturing environment

  • Understanding of raw materials impact on process and product quality

  • Experience with lifecycle management, change control, and risk assessment processes

  • Experience working with external manufacturing sites or CMOs is preferred

  • Demonstrated experience leading technical or cross-functional projects in a biopharmaceutical, MSAT, Quality, Supply Chain, or external manufacturing environment is preferred

  • Proven ability to influence stakeholders without direct authority and drive alignment across functions, sites, suppliers, or CMOs is required

  • Strong project leadership skills, including the ability to define scope, structure workstreams, manage timelines, identify risks, and drive decisions is required

  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous or changing environments, creating structure, prioritizing actions, and moving work forward with limited guidance is required

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills is required

  • Working knowledge of GMP and applicable regulatory frameworks is required

The anticipated base pay range for this position is:

€64,000.00 - €103,040.00

In addition to base pay, we offer the following benefits*: an annual bonus with set target (% of pay) depending on pay grade / location, where the actual amount is based on the employees’ and companies’ performance of the previous calendar year, or sales commissions.
