Job Description:

Principal Scientist, MSAT Bio DS Lab is a high-impact scientific leadership role within the MSAT BioTherapeutics Drug Substance Lab in Leiden, supporting commercial product lifecycle management, complex investigations, and secondary technology transfers.

J&J Innovative Medicine Supply Chain is seeking a Principal Scientist to lead the scientific pillar of the Manufacturing Science and Technology BioTherapeutics Drug Substance Lab in Leiden, the Netherlands, with accountability for scientific excellence, team leadership, and delivery against strategic business priorities.

The MSAT Bio DS Lab is part of the global MSAT organization and is established to strengthen end-to-end ownership of current and future commercial BioTherapeutic products.

The lab will operate small-scale upstream, downstream, and process analytical capabilities to enable process understanding, investigation work, and technical support across monoclonal antibodies, complex glycoproteins, and bi- and tri-specific molecules.

The team will support lifecycle management of commercial products, secondary technology transfers, complex process investigations, process improvements, and non-routine sample management for Leiden and the broader EU and ROW network.

You will lead and develop a team of scientists, set scientific direction, and ensure delivery of high-quality, business-relevant outcomes in a highly collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Team Development: Lead and coach a high-performing scientific team while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous development.
  • Scientific Leadership & Delivery: Provide scientific leadership across BioTherapeutics Drug Substance lifecycle activities with a focus on Downstream Processing and ensure robust design, execution, interpretation, and communication of studies and investigations.
  • Stakeholder Partnership: Partner effectively with site and global stakeholders to align priorities, translate scientific insight into action, and represent the lab in cross-functional forums.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Education: PhD in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 8 years in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry with strong experience in BioTherapeutics Drug Substance development and scientific team leadership.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of biologics manufacturing, experimental design, scale-up, technology transfer, and applicable regulatory and GMP requirements.
  • Leadership & Communication: Strong communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills with the ability to lead through complexity and drive sound scientific decisions.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is:

€68,600.00 - €119,600.00
