The Value Chain Leader (VCL) leads global, cross-functional teams to implement supply chain strategies for new product introductions. This role ensures effective collaboration among business partners throughout the product lifecycle
Role and Responsibilities of the Value Chain Leader (VCL)
New Product Introduction (NPI) Strategy and Execution
The VCL leads strategy and execution for new product launches, working with CMC and Global Commercial Teams. Responsibilities include meeting Innovative Medicines Supply Chain (IMSC) deliverables, managing projects, setting priorities, developing business cases, and overseeing implementation. The VCL also guides NPI and launch through CMC Stage Gates, manages financials (including long-term plans and budgets), assesses risks and trade-offs, and ensures product launch readiness.
Sourcing and Supply Chain Strategy
The VCL is responsible for sourcing products, identifying future sourcing locations as needed, and setting brand supply chain strategy. They create the Product Strategy Roadmap (PSR), prepare business cases for full Life Cycle Management (LCM) prioritization, secure stakeholders' alignment, funding, and oversee implementation of the approved LCM plan across relevant teams within and outside IMSC.
Risk Management and Communication
An essential aspect of the VCL’s role is the identification, mitigation, and communication of supply chain-related risks. The VCL manages risks throughout the product’s development, launch readiness, and optimization stages. They ensure that commercial strategies and customer needs are integrated into the development of the launch strategy, the product supply chain strategy, and the PSR.
Business Partner Engagement and Representation
The VCL represents IMSC in Integrated Brand Value Teams, Compound Development Teams (CDT) and Disease Area Strongholds as needed. They build partnerships and manage communications across a diverse group of functions that includes Discovery Pharmaceutical Development and Supply (DPDS), IMSC, Quality, and commercial and strategy development teams, including IMSC Planning and customer management groups.
Team Leadership and Development
The VCL mentors and provides feedback to Value Chain Team (VCT) members and their functional management regarding performance within the VCT. They offer guidance in resolving both technical and business conflicts and champion an environment that challenges the status quo. The VCL leads the team in adopting innovative approaches, embedding digital tools, and centering activities around customer needs.
Strategic Supply Chain Ownership
The VCL manages key supply chain inputs, such as target product profile, product development, brand investment, supply chain setup, and global launch strategy. Their responsibilities include evaluating and improving supply chain reliability, resilience, and cycle time reduction, and using digital tools like digital twins for end to end optimization.
Product Performance and Issue Management
The VCL leads all aspects of product performance by managing COGs, monitoring quality metrics and inventory, ensuring compliance, and planning demand and capacity. They lead business plan reviews and address issues through Issue Management Teams when needed.
Qualifications
Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or engineering field is essential, with preference given to candidates possessing an advanced technical degree (MSc, PhD) related to science and engineering or an MBA .
Candidates should possess knowledge of developing and manufacturing complex synthetic products, including areas such as synthetic chemistry, continuous manufacturing, spray drying, and Process Analytical Technology (PAT).
10+ years of experience in both supply chain operations and R&D. Applicants need to have a thorough grasp of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API)/Drug Product (DP) Operations, Manufacturing, Technical Transfers, New Product Development and Launch, as well as Quality and Regulatory matters within the pharmaceutical or a comparable industry.
A background in managing portfolios featuring complex products or projects is necessary, alongside a proven history of delivering outcomes and leading multifunctional, global virtual teams effectively.
Outstanding English communication skills, both written and verbal, at all levels are indispensable and clear communication to Sr leaders
Preferred:
Business and Financial competence - proficiency in understanding business needs and supply chain product metrics, along with a demonstrated capacity to enhance those metrics, is required.
Applicants should be skilled in preparing cost-benefit analyses and communicating compelling business cases to business partners, supporting informed, customer-focused decisions.
