Job Description:

DePuy Synthes is recruiting for a Legal Director, Italy and Spain, located in Pomezia, Italy.

The Legal Director, Italy & Spain serves as the primary legal advisor for DePuy Synthes across Italy & Spain This role provides legal and operational counsel to senior business leaders, enabling compliant growth, risk‑informed decision‑making, and sound commercial execution within a highly regulated medical devices environment. This role partners closely with commercial, supply chain, regulatory, and government affairs teams, and plays a critical role in managing risk, supporting complex transactions, and shaping ethical business practices in a highly regulated environment. The position acts as a trusted partner to regional leadership and collaborates with Privacy, Health Care Compliance and other functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary legal advisor for DePuy Synthes operations across Italy & Spain advising business and functional leaders on legal and compliance matters.
  • Provide legal counsel on healthcare compliance, medical device regulations, product liability, advertising and promotion, legal disputes and interactions with healthcare professionals and institutions.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including distributor, customer, government, consulting and strategic alliance contracts.
  • Identify, assess, and manage legal risks, recommending pragmatic solutions aligned with business objectives and company policies.
  • Partner with regional Health Care Compliance and Privacy teams to ensure consistent application of standards and policies.
  • Support investigations, disputes, regulatory inquiries, and litigation matters in collaboration with in-house and external counsel and manage legal spend.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in local and regional laws and regulations impacting the medical devices industry, proactively advising the business on implications.
  • Support ethics and compliance training initiatives and promote a strong culture of integrity across the region.

Qualifications

Education

  • Law degree (or equivalent legal qualification) recognized in Italy is required and must be duly admitted, enrolled, or otherwise authorized to practice law in Italy.
  • Admission to practice law in additional relevant European jurisdiction(s) is a plus.

Experience and Skills

Required:

  • Candidates should have significant post-qualification experience (typically in the region of 10-12 years, though candidates with less experience who can demonstrate the requisite level of expertise are also encouraged to apply).
  • Senior in-house or equivalent experience supporting regulated industries.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial, healthcare, and regulatory law applicable to Italy and other covered countries.
  • Strong negotiation, drafting, and contract interpretation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clear, commercially grounded and pragmatic legal advice to senior leaders and cross‑functional teams.
  • Experience managing complex commercial contracts, legal risk mitigation, and external counsel.
  • Strong judgment and integrity, with the adaptability to operate effectively in a complex, fast‑evolving global organization, including comfort working through ambiguity and a demonstrated willingness to engage with innovative solutions, technology, and new ways of working and ability to operate effectively in a complex global organization.

Preferred:

  • Experience within the medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or life sciences sector.
  • Exposure to multicounty or regional legal support models.
  • Familiarity with EU, competition law, data protection and privacy laws.

Additional Information

  • Languages: Fluency in English and Italian required; additional European or regional languages preferred.
  • Travel: Up to 20%, primarily within Europe and the broader region.
  • Certification: Active legal practicing certificate required. ​

Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals. The anticipated base pay range for this position is:

€95,900.00 - €165,370.00

In addition to base pay, we offer the following benefits*: an annual bonus with set target (% of pay) depending on pay grade / location, where the actual amount is based on the employees’ and companies’ performance of the previous calendar year, or sales commissions.
