Inside mentorship at Johnson & Johnson

As the world of work continues to evolve—and in-demand skills rapidly shift—learning and development becomes more important than ever. With that in mind, here’s how we’re accelerating career growth at Johnson & Johnson.

“The only constant is change” is attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus, but it’s also axiomatic for Adam Schreiber, Global Director, Transformation Management Office at Johnson & Johnson, as his title suggests.

Still, he admits being at once surprised and delighted by the recent launch of J&J Learn, our best-in-class platform for employee learning and development.

“I remember feeling so much excitement when I got my first ‘mentorship notification’ through the platform,” Adam said. “I realized that my mentorship journey with Johnson & Johnson was truly beginning.”

Soon after, Adam connected with Emily Balerna, HR Leader, HRLDP at Johnson & Johnson.

Unpacking the mentor-mentee relationship

What prompted Emily to reach out to Adam in the first place?

Part of the answer is that she was eager to learn more about change management, which is Adam’s area of expertise. But there’s a lot more to the story.

As Emily pointed out, “When you have a successful mentorship, it often feels serendipitous, like there’s this unique synergy between mentor and mentee that can’t be forced.”

Which is precisely why we built J&J Learn: to make those kinds of relationships not only possible but even probable for everyone on our team who wishes to pursue them.

The process begins with guided self-reflection exercises in which you’re asked to critically reflect on your goals, learning style, interests and more. From there, the AI-powered platform identifies key commonalities between mentors and mentees, then recommends the best matches.

I love to mentor, but having the ability to seamlessly match based on skills and interests makes the experience even better.

The benefits of best-fit matches

How can J&J Learn, by combining the power of self-reflection with AI-powered matching capabilities, accelerate your career growth and development?

“I think asking mentors and mentees to first think about what they bring to the table—and what they each want to take away from the experience—is a critical step,” Emily reflected. “It really helps ensure the success of the relationship.”

After 13 months, indeed, Emily and Adam can’t stop gushing about the relationship they’ve built and the platform that made it possible.

“I’ve learned so much thanks to J&J Learn,” Emily said. “I feel like my relationship with Adam is stronger than ever.”

Adam agreed, adding, “I think it’s important for the mentor-mentee relationship to be a two-way street, and at this point I’m sure that I’ve learned at least as much from Emily as she has from me.”
