Job Description:

Job Summary:

The Staff EHS Engineer - Biosafety Officer will co-develop and implement comprehensive biosfafety policies and programs to ensure the safe handling of biological materials while leading EHS initiatives across the organization. This role requires a deep understanding of biosafety protocols, regulatory compliance, and standard methodologies in laboratories, production areas and environmental safety.

Key Responsibilities:

Biosafety Management:

  • Co-develop, implement, and maintain the biosafety management program.

  • Conduct risk assessments and develop biosafety protocols for handling biological materials.

  • Implement training programs for staff on biosafety practices and procedures.

  • Supervise compliance with relevant local regulations and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) guidelines.

Environmental Health and Safety:

  • Collaborate with the EHS team to develop and implement policies for a safe working environment.

  • Coordinate, control, develop, and improve EHS systems, processes, and practices.

  • Lead and support the implementation of EHS standards/systems within areas of expertise.

  • Participate in hazard assessments, internal and external audits, and inspections related to EHS (e.g., ISO 14001).

  • Respond to incidents, participate in investigations, and provide recommendations for corrective actions.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with local and J&J regulations regarding biosafety & biosecurity, and environmental health & safety.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws and regulations and their application in the workplace.

  • Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Serve as contact for biosafety and EHS-related inquiries and concerns.

  • Mentor and develop teams of Standards Owners, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and EHS representatives.

  • Collaborate with researchers, laboratories, operations and other partners to foster a culture of safety.

  • Develop and present educational materials and training on biosafety and EHS topics.

  • Driven to search for practical biosafety solutions which are compliant with local, national codes and J&J Standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or relevant field, Environmental Science, Occupational Health, or a related field (Master’s preferred).

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Biosafety, EHS, or bioscience lab / production environment, with progressive responsibility.

  • Certified Biosafety Officer (Biologische Veiligheidsfunctionaris who is registered at BGGO)

  • Strong understanding of relevant regulations and standards in biosafety and EHS, including experience with ISO 14001 (preferred).

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, proficient in both spoken and written Dutch and English.

  • Confirmed Ability to work collaboratively in complex organizations and influence diverse partners.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in laboratory / production and coordination of safety programs.

  • Additional qualifications such as Safety Manager Level 3 (“HVK”) and/or Industrial Hygiene (“AH”) are a plus.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is:

€64 000,00 - €103 040,00

In addition to base pay, we offer the following benefits*: an annual bonus with set target (% of pay) depending on pay grade / location, where the actual amount is based on the employees’ and companies’ performance of the previous calendar year, or sales commissions.
