We are searching for the best talent for the Global Head, Scientific Communication and Publications (Oncology) to be based in Raritan, NJ.
Position Summary
The Global Head, Scientific Communication and Publications provides enterprise leadership for the development and execution of global scientific communication strategies across the oncology franchise, spanning both hematologic malignancies and solid tumors.
This role is accountable for shaping and delivering a consistent, high-impact external scientific narrative across marketed and investigational assets, enabling scientific exchange and ensuring impactful communication that informs clinical practice and stakeholder decision-making. The Global Head leads a global organization responsible for scientific communications, publications, and medical content, with dedicated therapeutic area and asset leads (e.g., Hematology, Solid Tumor), as well as medical writers and contractors reporting into this role.
The position partners closely with Global Medical Affairs Leaders (GMALs), Strategy & Execution Leads (SELs), Clinical Development Teams (CDTs), R&D, Market Access, and regional leadership to integrate scientific communications with evidence generation and medical strategy, supporting engagement with internal stakeholders (e.g., Field Medical, Market Access) and external stakeholders (e.g., healthcare professionals, investigators).
This role contributes to advancing innovative oncology science and improving patient outcomes globally.
Major Responsibilities
- Franchise Scientific Communications Leadership
Define and lead global scientific communication strategies across the oncology franchise, ensuring a consistent, differentiated, and aligned external scientific narrative across therapeutic areas and assets.
- Global Publication Strategy & Prioritization
Establish, prioritize, and oversee global publication strategies and execution across the asset lifecycle; define publication investments and ensure alignment with evidence generation plans and portfolio priorities across Hematology and Solid Tumor portfolios.
- Organizational Leadership & Talent Development
Lead and develop a global team of scientific communication and publication leads across therapeutic areas and key assets; provide coaching, talent development, and performance management while building scalable capabilities. - Medical Content Strategy
Provide strategic oversight of the One Content Plan and global medical content strategy, ensuring integrated planning, prioritization, and consistent scientific messaging across global and regional stakeholders. - Enterprise Cross-functional Integration
Serve as a senior strategic partner to GMALs, SELs, CDTs, R&D, and Market Access leadership to align scientific communications with evidence generation, data readouts, and lifecycle strategy. - Governance, Performance & Execution Excellence
Establish governance models (e.g., publication steering committees), KPIs, and performance metrics to ensure high-quality, timely, and compliant execution across assets; proactively identify risks and drive mitigation strategies. - Vendor Strategy & External Engagement
Define and oversee global vendor strategy and agency partnerships with a focus on vendor efficiency; represent Johnson & Johnson in external scientific forums, including engagement with journals, congress leadership, academic institutions, and key opinion leaders. - Scientific Content Oversight
Provide strategic guidance and oversight on the development of scientific communication outputs (e.g., abstracts, manuscripts, congress materials, scientific communication plans, lexicons, etc.) to ensure quality, consistency, and alignment with the overall scientific narrative. - Innovation & Digital Enablement
Drive adoption of innovative approaches, including AI and digitally enabled capabilities, to enhance efficiency, insight generation, and impact of scientific communications. - Compliance & Policy Leadership
Ensure adherence to Johnson & Johnson policies, publication SOPs, and industry standards (e.g., GPP), including oversight of authorship, copyright, and embargo requirements.
Accountability
- Own and deliver an integrated global scientific communications and publication strategy for the oncology franchise.
- Ensure consistent execution of high-quality scientific communications across Hematology and Solid Tumor portfolios.
- Provide strategic oversight and input into Integrated Evidence Generation Plans, with accountability for publication and dissemination strategy.
- Lead enterprise publication governance, including steering committees and cross-functional decision-making forums.
- Ensure organizational compliance with applicable policies, SOPs, and industry standards.
- Drive operational excellence in planning, execution, resource allocation, and budget management across the function.
Qualifications
- Advanced degree required (PharmD, PhD, MD, or equivalent).
- Significant experience (typically 12+ years) in scientific communications, publications, or global medical affairs.
- Demonstrated leadership across oncology portfolios, including both hematologic malignancies and solid tumors.
- Proven experience leading global teams, including direct management of senior leaders.
- Strong strategic thinking with ability to translate complex scientific data into impactful communication strategies.
- Experience operating in a highly matrixed global environment with ability to influence senior stakeholders.
- Experience managing large-scale budgets, vendor ecosystems, and external partnerships.
Additional Information
- Significant interaction with senior internal stakeholders and external thought leaders (e.g., healthcare professionals, investigators, journals, scientific societies).
- Up to ~25% domestic and international travel may be required.
- ISMPP certification or equivalent expertise in publication standards preferred.
The anticipated base pay range for this position is $196,000. - 342,700.
The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.

Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year
Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year
Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year of Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
