Job Responsibilities:
The Senior Machinist will serve as a key technical resource within a small, modern prototype machine shop supporting a rapidly growing medical device company. This role requires a hands-on machinist who can independently plan, set up, machine, inspect, and troubleshoot complex prototype components while collaborating directly with engineers on design intent, manufacturability, tooling, fixtures, and quick-turn design changes. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a dynamic environment where priorities shift and creative problem-solving is essential.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the development of new products by fabricating prototype components.
- Fabricate metal and plastic components utilizing machine shop equipment.
- Execute work orders in a timely manner.
- Review incoming work orders for scheduling and completeness.
- Ensure equipment is properly maintained and shop is kept in a clean, organized, and safe state.
- Assist others with machine shop services as required.
- Provide design consulting to engineering.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and reverse engineer parts to be remade and or modified.
- Lead machine shop enhancement projects
- Order tooling, shop supplies, and consumables as needed to support machine shop operations.
- Serve as a senior technical resource for complex machining, prototype fabrication, tooling, fixture, and quick-turn engineering support requests.
- Collaborate with engineers to review designs, identify manufacturability concerns, recommend practical improvements, and support rapid design iterations.
- Independently plan machining approaches, setups, tooling selections, work holding strategies, and inspection methods for prototype and low-volume components.
- Mentor less experienced machinists or shop users on safe equipment operation, machining best practices, setup techniques, and inspection methods.
- Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to improve shop workflow, equipment utilization, tooling organization, safety, and turnaround time.
- Maintain high standards for part quality by verifying dimensions, finishes, fit, and function before releasing completed work to engineering or manufacturing teams.
Job Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical school, trade school, apprenticeship, or machining certificate preferred.
- 3+ years of machining experience preferred, including prototype, short-run, tooling, fixture, or custom component work.
- Strong hands-on experience with manual mills, lathes, saws, grinders, sanders, and general machine shop equipment.
- Experience operating ProtoTRAK mills and lathes preferred, especially SX and RX controls.
- Strong all-around machining knowledge with the ability to independently plan setups, select tooling, establish machining sequences, and troubleshoot issues.
- Ability to machine a variety of materials including aluminum, stainless steel, tool steel, plastics, and other engineering materials.
- Able to read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, models, and verbal instructions.
- Strong understanding of tolerances, fits, finishes, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Ability to inspect completed work using standard measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges, and pin gauges.
- Experience working directly with engineers to provide manufacturability feedback and support rapid design iterations.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing changing priorities and quick-turn requests.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to reverse engineer, modify, repair, or improve existing parts and assemblies.
- Detail-oriented and quality-focused, with a strong commitment to accuracy, safety, and shop organization.
- Computer literacy required; basic SolidWorks or CAD experience preferred.
- Experience in a medical device, regulated manufacturing, R&D, prototype, or product development environment preferred.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is: $45,000 - $73,500.
The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis. Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance. Employees may be eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401k).This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program. Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits: Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year. Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year.
