Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone Orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals.

Should you accept this position, it is anticipated that, following conclusion of the transaction, you would be an employee of DePuy Synthes, and your employment would be governed by DePuy Synthes employment processes, programs, policies, and benefit plans. In that case, details of any planned changes would be provided to you by DePuy Synthes at an appropriate time and subject to any necessary consultation processes.


The Staff Software Engineer will work with design engineers, surgeons, manufacturing, quality, regulatory affairs, product directors, and other team members to design and develop software for new and existing electro-mechanical devices and associated capital equipment. This individual will be responsible for design and implementation of software solutions, as an active participant in all phases of the software development lifecycle. In addition, the engineer will be responsible for planning assigned tasks and completing software development project deliverables. The individual will know and follow all laws and policies that apply to one's job, and maintain the highest levels of professionalism, ethics and compliance.

You will:

  • Serve as the Software Technical Lead for strategic capital equipment and power tool development programs, with responsibility for software architecture, technical direction, and delivery execution.
  • Lead embedded software architecture, design, development, integration, and verification for safety-critical medical device applications.
  • Act as the primary software subject matter expert within a cross-functional development team, partnering closely with systems, electrical, mechanical, cybersecurity, quality, and regulatory engineering functions.
  • Develop production software in C/C++ and Python while providing hands-on technical leadership throughout development activities.
  • Translate product and system requirements into scalable software architectures, detailed designs, and executable development plans.
  • Drive all phases of the software development lifecycle including requirements definition, architecture, implementation, unit testing, integration, verification, validation support, release, and post-market support.
  • Lead hardware/software integration activities, board bring-up, and system-level problem solving using data-driven root cause analysis techniques.
  • Direct, prioritize, and review software work performed by external development partners and vendors, ensuring alignment with project objectives, quality expectations, and regulatory requirements.
  • Delegate software development activities while maintaining overall accountability for software quality, technical execution, and delivery timelines.
  • Evaluate technical alternatives, identify risks, and make architecture and implementation decisions that balance performance, maintainability, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance.
  • Champion software engineering procedures including code reviews, source control, automated testing, documentation, and design controls.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to internal and external software contributors.
  • Serve as the key software representative during design reviews, risk management activities, regulatory submissions, and senior leadership reviews.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline with 8+ years of relevant experience; Master's degree with 6+ years; or PhD with 4+ years.
  • Strong software development experience in C and C++.
  • Experience developing software using Python for automation, testing, tooling, or product features.
  • Experience developing software for embedded microcontroller systems.
  • Experience with bare-metal and RTOS-based embedded systems development.
  • Experience with embedded Linux development, including device drivers, services, and application-level software.
  • Experience with board bring-up, hardware/software integration, and low-level debugging.
  • Experience with communication protocols including SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, USB, Ethernet, TCP/IP, and UDP.
  • Experience delivering commercial products through a complete product development lifecycle.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles, including source control, code reviews, configuration management, and software release processes.
  • Experience developing software under regulated design control environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience managing external software development partners and outsourced engineering activities.
  • Willing to work in medical environments such as cadaver labs and Operating Rooms is required.
  • Experience developing software for FDA-regulated medical devices.
  • Knowledge of IEC 62304 medical device software lifecycle processes.

  • Knowledge of ISO 14971 risk management principles.
  • Experience supporting software cybersecurity activities for connected medical devices.
  • Hands-on experience with STMicroelectronics and/or Texas Instruments microcontroller platforms.

  • Understanding of software architecture methodologies, UML, and design patterns.
  • Experience working with Agile development methodologies and DevOps practices.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and static analysis tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics and interface specifications.
  • Experience with motor control, power tools, surgical capital equipment, imaging systems, or connected medical devices.
  • Knowledge developing Windows applications.
  • Proven experience in design and development of applications and drivers on Linux.

This position is based in Raynham, MA or Palm Beach Gardens, FL and may require up to 10% travel including international.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is: $109,000 - $174,900.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis. Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal insurance. Employees may be eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401k).This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program. Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits: Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year. Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year.
