Karlee Ruth is optimistic about the future of AI and its pivotal role in streamlining processes that enhance patient care and access. As a member of the Advanced Analytics team at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, Karlee works on cross-functional teams to leverage data and build models to better meet business needs. From early discovery to market access and patient education, her team supports the best science and most creative minds as they work to serve patients.

Karlee’s experience in leveraging data and deriving insights to build models and optimize resources shows how AI is playing a major role in the way the company conducts business. As human and machine learning continue to grow, so do the opportunities stemming from this partnership.

Transforming Healthcare Through AI: Meet Data Scientist Sarah Howe

Sarah Howe plays a dynamic role on the AI products and strategy team that stretches across all five therapeutic areas at Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, working to weave together the expertise of data scientists, engineers, UI developers, and business partners from marketing and sales. By weaving these pieces together, the AI products and strategy team is accelerating discoveries and driving real-world impact.

“We work on a variety of digital innovations, from omni-channel campaign optimization to building applications from the ground up and leveraging generative AI to improve customer interactions. Every brand has its own set of challenges and opportunities, which can require a great deal of creativity in how we design our solutions.”

Driven by a fascination with mathematics, Sarah found her calling in AI by exploring the statistical underpinnings of deep learning models and the potential to solve business problems related to optimization. Sarah is excited by the transformative potential of large language models in customer-facing tools and internal workflows and sees personalized communication as a key in healthcare.

“I think most people prefer personalized communication. It is the way we engage with all major brands today, so why not in healthcare, which is even more personal in many ways.”

Looking forward, Sarah envisions a future where AI is the foundation of the Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine customer experience, revolutionizing engagement with healthcare providers and patients and freeing up time for individuals to tackle more complex problems.

Fernando Penaloza is a key member of the Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine Data Science team, working to build prescriptive models that not only forecast outcomes for the field, but also provide actionable insights to drive desired outcomes. AI supports Fernando and team as they leverage expansive data sets and address the biggest challenges of our time to accelerate how J&J Innovative Medicine discovers, diagnoses and treats disease.

 “Our focus is always on putting our patients first. These prescriptive models support our efforts to reach more patients and providers who might benefit from our development of new and innovative treatments and medications.”
