Building skills, relationships and a global career from J&J Bogotá

Read this story in Spanish

From the J&J Capability Center in Bogotá, we support hiring and recruiting across Latin America and North America while working with colleagues in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific to strengthen processes and share practices across regions. It’s where Nathalia M. challenged herself to try new experiences, build skills, and move from the learning and development team into talent acquisition.

Her path offers a glimpse of what your own career could become when curiosity, courage, and continuous learning are actively encouraged, and you’re empowered to grow beyond the boundaries of a single role.

A project became a career turning point

As a Learning Administration Specialist, Nathalia managed our employee education platform and supported learning strategies for new products and launches. The role also helped her build confidence communicating in different languages and working with teams across cultures.

She knew she wanted to work with and for people, but the next step emerged over time. Development conversations, mentorship, stretch projects and support from her leader helped her identify her strengths. One of those experiences was a Grow Gig, or a stretch assignment designed to help employees learn new skills. It gave her a low-risk way to apply her capabilities in another part of human resources before a permanent opening became available.

“That experience helped me discover that I could build on many of my strengths, and that’s when I understood talent acquisition was where I wanted to continue developing professionally,” says Nathalia, now an Americas TA Activation Senior Specialist in Bogotá.

Learning to speak up in bigger rooms

The move brought more strategic topics and a new level of stakeholders. Nathalia did not always feel ready to answer complex questions or lead high-impact conversations, so her leader and teammates joined important meetings, explained the context and made room for her to learn through practice.

“They gave me the confidence to build my own voice and credibility,” she says.

If you're thinking about growing in TA/HR in Bogotá, you should know that you're arriving at a place where people believe in you even before you see your own full potential.

Innovation with measurable impact

Nathalia’s latest assignment gives that growth a concrete outlet. She is helping build new digital infrastructure to create more intuitive ways for recruiters and hiring teams to find hiring information, documentation and processes—an effort projected to reduce related support and intake cases by about 60%.

She primarily supports the Americas while working with teams in EMEA and APAC, including colleagues in the Philippines, China and the United Kingdom.

“This global collaboration is key to ensuring alignment across processes, sharing best practices and delivering solutions that work at both the regional and global level,” Nathalia says.

It also draws on skills she developed in her former role: communicating across languages, understanding different operating contexts and turning varied needs into practical solutions.

Growth is easier when you don’t have to do it alone

For Nathalia, the Bogotá hub’s strongest feature is the combination of access and community. Teams work close to one another, leaders are available to listen and initiatives such as Employee Business Resource Groups reinforce inclusion. Flexible scheduling and well-being resources are also part of her experience, although specific offerings may vary by role, location and eligibility.

Her advice is practical: “Build a network, get involved in projects, take advantage of programs like mentorships or Grow Gigs and dare to step outside your comfort zone.”

Your next move may begin before you feel ready

Nathalia’s path began with curiosity, a short-term project and people willing to help her learn. If you’re considering a career in Talent Acquisition or Human Resources, that same willingness to explore may be the first step toward work that crosses teams, functions and regions.
